What role does particle size play in silicon powders?

At ChemPUR, our product range includes silicon powder in several defined particle-size ranges, as grain size has a direct influence on the material’s behaviour in the respective application. Powders with a grain size below 30 micrometres or below 160 micrometres are suitable for sintering processes, coating applications and the production of ceramic bodies where homogeneous distribution is required. Amorphous silicon powder in the sieve fraction -100/+325 mesh with a purity of 99.999% is preferred where defined particle-size distributions and high chemical purity are required at the same time.

Silicon nanopowder with an average particle diameter below 100 nm and a specific surface area of 80 m²/g exhibits significantly increased reactivity due to its high surface-to-volume ratio, which is relevant for applications in battery technology or catalysis. What is the difference between silicon(II) oxide and silicon(IV) oxide?

In addition to the standard forms of elemental silicon, we also supply silicon oxides, which differ fundamentally in composition, stability and application. Silicon(IV) oxide (SiO₂) is the thermodynamically stable compound that is widespread in nature—known as quartz, fused silica or amorphous silica gel. It is used in optics, in semiconductor technology as a dielectric, in glass manufacturing and as a filler.

Silicon(II) oxide (SiO), by contrast, is a metastable compound formed by the reaction of SiO₂ with elemental silicon at high temperatures. It is used primarily as an evaporation material in thin-film technology, for example for depositing optical protective coatings. Both oxides are available in different purity grades and forms. Which silicon is suitable for ceramic materials?

Requirements for purity and form vary particularly widely for ceramic and high-temperature-resistant materials—silicon provides a broad basis as a starting element. Silicon carbide (SiC) and silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) are among the most technically important advanced ceramics: they are characterised by high hardness, thermal stability and chemical resistance and are used in wear protection technology, engine construction and semiconductor process technology.

Silicon powders with defined particle sizes are used as starting materials for such sintering processes, with the purity of the starting powder having a decisive influence on the properties of the end product. ChemPUR supplies both silicon powders and the corresponding compounds such as SiC and Si₃N₄ in various specifications. Which silicon compounds are available?

In addition to elemental silicon, ChemPUR supplies a broad spectrum of silicon compounds for research, development, synthesis and technical applications. These include, among others, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, silicon boride, silicon(II) oxide, silicon(IV) oxide, silicic acid and silicon(IV) acetate. Silicon oxides represent a particularly broad area. They are available, among other forms, as powders, pieces, granules and nanopowders. Depending on the product, ultra-high-purity grades up to 99.9997% are available. Silicon carbide and silicon nitride are also available in multiple specifications, including nano grades for applications with special requirements regarding surface area and particle structure. Which compound is suitable for your application depends on the desired chemical composition, purity, particle size and further processing. Which forms does ChemPUR offer?

For powder-based applications, silicon powders are available in different particle sizes, including grades below 30 µm, below 160 µm, as well as amorphous powder in a defined mesh fraction. For applications requiring a particularly fine particle structure, silicon is also available as nanopowder with an average particle size below 100 nm. Where a coarser, easier-to-handle form is required, silicon pieces or high-purity granules can be used.

For technical assemblies and materials-science investigations, the range also includes foils, rods and discs. For thin-film technology, silicon sputtering targets are available in various thicknesses. This allows the product form to be selected specifically according to particle size, geometry, purity and further processing. In which purities is silicon available?

ChemPUR offers silicon across a broad purity spectrum from 98.5+% to 99.9999%. This allows you to select the quality to suit your application—from preparative and technical processes to particularly demanding research and development projects. For powder-based applications, for example, silicon powders below 30 µm or below 160 µm with 98.5+% are available. Where higher purities are required, amorphous silicon powder in the fraction -100/+325 mesh with 99.999% is available.

Silicon pieces are offered, depending on dimensions, in purities of 99.9%, 99.99% and 99.999%. For particularly high requirements, silicon granules with 99.9999%, silicon foils and rods with 99.999%, as well as sputtering targets with 99.999% are also available. Which purity is suitable depends on how sensitive your process is to impurities and which product form you require.
