What purities of scandium are available?

In addition to standard purities, our scandium product range includes quality grades from 99% to 99.999% on a REO basis. This specification is particularly relevant for rare earth materials, as the purity refers to the proportion of rare earth oxides, thereby enabling better comparability of specifications. This allows for the selection of suitable grades for research, development, and industrial processes depending on the application.

Metallic scandium – as powder or pieces – is available in purities from 99.9% to 99.99%. Selected compounds such as scandium chloride hydrate or scandium carbonate reach purities of up to 99.999% REO. For applications where impurities may affect the result, a correspondingly higher purity level is recommended. If you have any questions regarding the appropriate specification, our specialist team will be happy to assist you with an expert assessment.

Which forms of scandium does ChemPUR offer?

High purity is not a matter of course – and this is especially true for an element like scandium, which is one of the more demanding materials to procure due to its rarity and complex extraction. Our range includes metallic scandium as powder (-100 mesh) and pieces, complemented by a wide spectrum of compounds such as acetates, carbonates, halides, nitrates, oxides, phosphates, and sulfates.

Custom-made products, for example in different geometries or specifications, are available upon request. As an ISO 9001:2015 certified family business, we work with a global network of dealers, enabling the procurement of even hard-to-find materials. Short internal communication channels mean that your inquiry will be processed directly by experienced professionals. For specific requirements, simply contact us directly.

What applications is scandium used for?

Through our global dealer network, scandium can be procured for a variety of demanding application areas where the element is specifically used due to its unique properties. As a light metal with a high melting point, scandium is used in aluminum-scandium alloys employed in aerospace and high-performance sports, as even small additions of scandium improve the strength and weldability of aluminum alloys.

Scandium oxide is being investigated as an electrolyte material in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), while scandium compounds are important in catalysis as well as in the production of laser crystals and special ceramics. In research, high-purity scandium serves as a starting material for the synthesis of defined compounds. We are directly available to provide information on the suitability of specific product forms for your application.

Which scandium compounds are available?

Our product range includes a wide selection of scandium compounds from various compound classes. In the halides category, scandium chloride is available both as an anhydrous powder and as a hydrate in purities from 99.9% to 99.999%; scandium fluoride is available as a powder at 99%. Among the oxygen compounds are scandium oxide, scandium carbonate, and scandium phosphate, while scandium acetate hydrate represents the acetate class.

Nitrates and sulfates complement the range. The compounds thus cover a wide spectrum for applications in synthetic chemistry, materials research, and catalysis. If a specific compound or specification is not listed in the standard range, we will investigate procurement options upon request. For a complete product overview with current availability, please contact our specialist team directly; we will be happy to advise you on which compounds are best suited for your applications.

What distinguishes scandium from other elements?

High-purity materials are in demand where impurities distort results or influence material properties – and scandium is a particularly striking example of this. Although it belongs to Group 3 of the periodic table and is formally not a rare earth metal, it is chemically closely related to the lanthanides, which is why it is often procured and processed alongside them. The silvery-white metal has a density of approximately 2.99 g/cm³, which is unusually low for transition metals, making it interesting for lightweight construction applications.

Scandium occurs only in low concentrations in the Earth’s crust and is not mined in pure form, but is predominantly obtained as a by-product of other metal extraction processes, which explains its relatively high procurement costs. For technical or scientific inquiries regarding the properties of the material, our specialist team is at your disposal.

Does ChemPUR offer scandium nanopowders?

Metallic scandium and its compounds are available in our range in various powder forms, including scandium metal powder with a grain size of -100 mesh. Whether scandium-based nanopowders are also available is best clarified in a direct conversation, as our global dealer network enables the procurement of even specialized particle sizes and morphologies. As an ISO 9001:2015 certified family business, we place particular emphasis on consistent quality and documented specifications. Custom-made products – including those with different particle sizes or specific surface characteristics – are also available from ChemPUR upon request.

Why is ChemPUR the right partner for scandium?

Scandium is often required for specialized research and development applications where purity, compound class, and availability must be precisely matched to the respective process. At ChemPUR, we offer a wide-ranging scandium portfolio for this purpose – from metallic scandium as powder or pieces to compounds such as oxides, halides, carbonates, and acetates.

You thus have access to a central source for various scandium materials and specifications. Especially with rare elements, it is helpful when product form, purity, and documentation can be considered together. Our specialist team supports you in selecting the appropriate quality for synthesis, materials research, analytics, or development projects.

Even for special requirements, such as purity levels, container sizes, or alternative scandium compounds, we are happy to investigate the available options. This way, you receive not just a single product, but expert support throughout the entire material selection process.
