In which purities is cobalt available?
At ChemPUR, cobalt is available across a broad purity spectrum that meets the requirements of a wide range of application areas. Our range includes grades from 99.5% up to 99.99%, covering both technical and high-purity research applications. Particularly fine powders with a grain size of 2–4 micrometres are available at 99.5% purity, while grades such as 99.95% or 99.99% are available for more demanding processes.
The range also includes cobalt nanopowder with an average particle diameter of 28 nm at a purity of 99.8%. Depending on requirements for trace-element freedom—for example with regard to nickel content—specially characterised batches are available. In practice, this means you can select the purity level that is right for your application directly, without having to compromise. What applications is cobalt used for?
Cobalt is used in research and industry wherever magnetic, catalytic or high-temperature-resistant properties are required. As a ferromagnetic metal, it is particularly suitable for materials-science applications, for example for permanent magnets, magnetic layers and storage media.
Cobalt also plays an important role in coating technology. Sputter targets and evaporation materials are used to produce thin functional layers with defined magnetic or electrical properties. In synthetic chemistry and catalysis, cobalt is used as an active material or as a component of suitable compounds.
Further fields of application include high-temperature and hard-metal alloys, nanotechnology and energy storage research. There, cobalt is relevant, among other things, as a component of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Which cobalt compounds are available?
In addition to elemental cobalt, our range includes various cobalt compounds that can be selected depending on chemical function and area of application. For synthesis processes and the production of functional materials, for example, cobalt acetates, cobalt nitrates and cobalt sulfates are suitable. These classes of compounds are often used where cobalt is required in soluble or readily processable form.
If oxide materials are required, cobalt oxides are available. They are particularly relevant for applications in catalysis, battery research and ceramics technology. For specialised materials-science and vacuum-technology processes, the range also includes cobalt borides as well as cobalt evaporation materials.
For demanding precursor applications, for example in chemical vapour deposition or coordination chemistry, cobalt pentanedionates are available. Cobalt halides expand the selection for applications where reactive or salt-like cobalt compounds are required. How is the quality of cobalt ensured?
Quality assurance plays an important role at ChemPUR. All cobalt products are described according to fixed specifications, for example with regard to purity, particle size and chemical composition.
For cobalt powders, purity grades and grain sizes, among other parameters, are documented. For cobalt nanopowders, you will also find information on particle size, specific surface area (BET) and morphology. Important trace elements, for example nickel content, are also stated for relevant products. This provides you with traceable quality information for each item, making it easier to select the right material. On request, we will be pleased to provide certificates of analysis or further product documentation.
Which cobalt forms does ChemPUR offer?
At ChemPUR, cobalt is available in various physical forms so that the material can be optimally matched to the respective processing process. For powder-based applications, cobalt nanopowder with an average particle diameter of 28 nm as well as micropowder in various sieve fractions are available, including -50 mesh, -200 mesh and -400 mesh.
For applications where a coarser or more easily dosed material form is required, ChemPUR offers electrolytic cobalt flakes, granules in the 1–3 mm fraction, and cylindrical pellets. These forms are particularly suitable for processes where flow behaviour, surface area or dosing properties play a role.
For technical and materials-science applications, the range also includes cobalt foils, wires, rods and sputter targets. These product forms are primarily used when defined geometries, mechanical stability or thin-film requirements are the focus.
