What applications is rubidium used for?
Rubidium is an alkali metal in period 5 with a range of interesting physical and chemical properties that make it attractive for various scientific and technical applications. In basic research, for example, rubidium is used in atomic physics, including in the development of atomic clocks and in laser-cooling experiments. Rubidium compounds are used in the glass industry as well as in the production of specialty glasses and ceramics.
In the electronics industry, rubidium salts are used as starting materials for functional layers and coating processes. Rubidium is also being investigated in research on photovoltaic systems and in medical imaging. How is rubidium delivered and stored safely?
Due to its pronounced reactivity, rubidium metal is one of the particularly safety-critical materials: it ignites in air and reacts explosively with water, which is why it must be handled and stored under a protective atmosphere. We therefore supply the metal exclusively in sealed ampoules or break-seal ampoules, which ensure safe handling until actual use.
As dangerous goods, transport is subject to special regulations—an additional dangerous goods freight surcharge applies for these products, the amount of which we will inform you of on request. For rubidium compounds in salt form, less stringent requirements generally apply; however, we also recommend dry, well-ventilated storage in accordance with the respective safety data sheets.
