In what purities is lithium available?

Lithium is available in various purity levels, which are selected according to the application and requirement profile. Common grades range from approximately 99% up to high-purity and ultra-high-purity specifications of 99.9%, 99.99%, or even higher.

For many technical applications and standard processes, purities in the range of 99% to 99.8% are sufficient. In contrast, for research, material development, or sensitive analytical procedures, high-purity grades from 99.9% to 99.995% are often used to minimize interference from impurities. Especially for electronic, optical, or electrochemical applications, the rule is: the higher the purity, the more reproducible the results.

Even within a purity class, specifications can differ, for example, regarding trace elements or metallic impurities. Therefore, a close look at the analysis data is worthwhile. Our experts will be happy to assist you in selecting the right quality.

What lithium forms does ChemPUR offer?

ChemPUR offers metallic lithium in various physical forms, including granules, foils, and wires. These different forms allow for targeted adaptation to your requirements in research, development, and industrial processes, particularly with regard to dosage, surface area ratio, and further processing.

Our lithium products are packaged under protective gas (e.g., argon) to reliably control high reactivity and ensure consistently high material quality. Depending on your needs, various purities, dimensions, and container sizes are available. Thanks to our worldwide dealer network, we can provide you with lithium in a wide range of specifications. Furthermore, with our experience in fine chemicals, we support you in selecting the appropriate form, always tailored to your technical requirements and process conditions.

For which applications is lithium used?

Due to its special physical and chemical properties, lithium is used in a variety of demanding applications. One of the best-known applications is its use in battery technologies, particularly in lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries, where it impresses with its low weight and high electrochemical potential. Furthermore, lithium is used in synthetic chemistry, for example, as a reagent in organic and organometallic reactions. In material research, it is used, among other things, for the development of new materials, ceramics, or functional materials.

Lithium also plays a role in analytics, for example, as a flux (e.g., lithium tetraborate) in sample preparation. In optical and electronic applications, compounds such as lithium niobate or lithium tantalate are used. Crucial for your application is the selection of the appropriate compound and purity – tailored to your application. Together, we will find the right lithium quality – tailored to your technical requirements and processes.

What lithium compounds are available?

How is lithium safely delivered and stored?

Lithium is a reactive element and is packaged and delivered according to product-specific requirements. In some cases, metallic lithium is provided under protective gas, such as argon, to reduce contact with air and moisture. Some products are labeled as hazardous goods. In these cases, shipping is carried out according to the applicable regulations. Corresponding information is included in the respective product information. The requirements for storage and handling depend on the specific product form and compound and must be observed on a product-specific basis.

What are the physical properties of lithium?

Lithium is characterized by a number of special physical properties that make it indispensable for demanding applications in research and industry. With a density of only 0.53 g/cm³, it is the lightest metal and is ideally suited for weight-optimized systems. The low melting point of 180.5 °C and the boiling point of 1,342 °C enable its use in a wide range of thermal processes. Furthermore, lithium is highly reactive and possesses a strongly negative electrochemical potential, which makes it particularly interesting for battery technologies and electrochemical applications.

In addition to these properties, the appropriate purity, the chosen form (e.g., granules, foil, or wire), and the specific reaction behavior under your process conditions are crucial for your application. Safe storage and handling – for example, under protective gas – also play an important role. We would be happy to advise you on identifying the suitable lithium product for your requirements.

How do I find the right lithium product?

The selection of the appropriate lithium product largely depends on your specific application. Key factors include the desired purity, the chemical form (e.g., lithium compounds or metallic lithium), the physical properties, and the intended use in synthesis, analytics, or material development.

We support you in finding the optimal solution. Thanks to our many years of experience in fine chemicals, we provide targeted advice on suitable specifications, alternatives, and possible optimizations. Especially for demanding applications, the motto is: “The right material determines the result.” If you are unsure or have special requirements, we will personally assist you – from product selection to individual custom productions that we precisely tailor to your applications. Together, we ensure that you receive exactly the lithium product that fits your project – reliably, efficiently, and at the highest quality level.
